#171650 - Some answers Responding to: Daniel Contarino's previous message |
Hi Daniel,

My question #1 is connected with programming. I have not worked with JTAG. I understood that, for in-circuit programming, using RS-232/JTAG adapter and Silabs flash programming PC software, I can program any of these MCUs, providing adequate connection to the four JTAG pins (and Vcc/Gnd). Is my asumption correct? Yes, your assumption is correct. The Debug Adapter will allow you to program and debug any of the SiLabs MCU's, either through JTAG or C2 (SiLabs 2-wire version of JTAG). It is very easy to implement in-application programming on these devices as well. And question #2 is more "subjective" and is related to Silabs products' quality and expected life. What is the general/particular opinion about these MCUs? I got my first Cygnal development kit about two weeks after they first started shipping. That was August 2000 and I've hardly used any other MCU since. I mainly use the C8051F310, which is great for most of the stuff I do. For things that need a bit more 'oomph', I use the C8051F122. As for quality, I have been shipping devices with the F310 at around 500/year since 2004 and haven't yet seen any field returns because of a defective controller. These devices are subjected to temperatures between about -20 and +50 °C and a fair amount of vibration and shock. Rob. |
