Hi Jan,

Yeah, I've been wondering that myself, however the real reason is that Atmel would look foolish if they introduced a hot '51, so they are dragging their feet when it comes to 8051, realistically they will never produce a 51 that is better than their AVR range.

Yes, Philips P89LPC range give 9 mips which is pretty good, however their are two attributes I don't like, the first is flash is limited to 8kbyte(or 16kbyte?) I want 64kbyte always, and secondly they are 3.6Vcc, I can work around the latter but why bother when you can have the ATmega644-20PU.
I currently have a prototype LCR meter working on my bench, using the AT89C51ED2, code tally so far is 24.6kbyte.

Incidently, does anyone here have any experiences prototyping with smd's?Can it be done?
