Which, for all practical purposes, is the same (external memory needed for experimentation).

You might perhaps source easier the 8041/8042, which served as keyboard controllers (the receiving end) in PCs, and are a derivative of 8048. They can be found - sometimes even socketed - in motherboards of the '286 era.
