Yes - that eliminates issues with the resistance in the cable for better control of the voltage at deactivation. And reduces radiation from the cable - since the cable can be seen as an antenna.

Just as we want our capacitors as close to the supply pins of the ICs, we want the diodes as close as possible to the coils.
