you may find there is less space consumed than with a 14-pin DIL. The ATMEL 2052, IIRC, is available in soic-20. That's pretty small.

If you leave the port pins in their default state, you probably (depends on which part) can ignore them.

Sooner or later, you may have to try some other architecture.
