Spoke a bit too soon. Not only the (supplied) documentation is buggy - I think the software is also.

When you use the "Auto Program" feature of the software, the steps are in the wrong order. The lockbits are written before the fusebits, meaning that the fusebits aren't actually written. I discovered this because the code was running about 4 times too fast. It should run on the 2MHz ceramic resonator, but it was actually running on the internal 8MHz oscillator.

When you reverse the lockbits/fusebits steps, the software runs at (almost) the correct speed. The "almost" part is my own fault - the software was originally written for the AT89C2051, and it needs a bit more tweaking.
