All the data sheets I have for 8255 and 82C55 stipulate a minimum reset pulse of 50 microseconds after power up and 500 nanoseconds thereafter. As had been mentioned hundreds of times on this forum, use a supervisor chip, such as Microchip's TC1232CPA. It holds the reset line high for 250 milliseconds after power has stabilized, thus giving a good, solid initial reset that even the 8255 can use.
You have chosen the 8051 wisely. You have World Class Engineers right here who will gladly help you. I'm sure PIC has its own forum, but this one is the best.
