There are many high-powered microcontrollers available (eg ARM to name but one), and the use of an RTOS in an embedded system that requires such a processor is often entirely reasonable!

But, again, the likelihood that an RTOS is of any benefit to any application appropriate to an 8051 is minimal. As for using Linux - well, Jez summed it up exaclty:
