Could you specify which make inverter were they and in which year you have tested them?
Allen-Bradley, ABB, Siemens and I am sure there were more. In many cases we supplied the inverter that the customer specified.

Because of late there is tremendous improvement in AC drive tech like in IGBTs , Gate driver circuits, Overcurrent & shortcircuit protections innovations etc.
It may be that you can use a 1200V unit with todays devices, but are you willing to take the risk to save $2?
