#105114 - Maybe a Name change?
Responding to: Andy Neil's previous message
Andy Neil said:
The fundamental thing that's missing is a definition of what RS-232 actually is, or any reference at all to the RS-232 standard.
In particular, the distinction between the logic-level asynchronous interface at the UART's IO pins, and the bipolar signalling (among other things) that specifically makes RS-232 - and hence the need for a transceiver (such as MAX232).

I kinda thought the reference to reference to Craig Peacock's Serial Guide covered most of this, however I think that I could work in a short paragraph to touch this.

Many misconceptions about RS232 are due to a failure to consult the Source Document; ie, the RS232 spec:

I will reference this in the links section and mention it.

Hyperterminal
You should mention that some Hyperterminal versions will let you change all the settings, and will even display the new settings in the status bar, but won't actually use the new settings until after you Disconnect and then Connect again.
This was true of the Win-98 version, at least.

Some versions grey-out all the options unless you Disconnect before entering the Properties dialogue.
Still not exactly brilliant User Interface design.

This is a definite mention.

Maybe I need to consider a little different name for the document? It was not intended to be a technical guide to the RS232 specification. It's more intended as a step by step guide to establishing a basic RS232 connection between PC and micro controller. Something someone can use to take the two basic components- 8051 and common RS232 transceiver, and establish a basic connection to a PC (Terminal). I would like to include links for more in depth reading, but the most basic purpose is to get the person started.

Jon

I do appreciate all comments good or bad. I hope to end up with something that can be referenced as the final answer to "How do I connect my project to a PC?"
