#105565 - 50,000 volts
Responding to: Farshid Jafari Harandi's previous message
In about 1968 Mercury outboard motors introduced thunderbolt ignition that came with ignitors instead of spark plugs. These were a concentric ring and electrode designed not to foul from ash deposits. The gap was fixed at .060 or .075 depending on the ignitor chosen. Minimum voltage for these to operate was 50 000 volts. They were a nasty ignition system to get a shock from as these were 2 cycle engines with steel cored wires.
GM's HEI, fords Dura spark, chryslers high energy system all were rated at 50+ kv at idle. A point to remember is that the resistance wires used in todays cars are from 6 to 20 000 ohms if you get a shock from the plug end the wire and your body form a voltage divider so you realy do not get all 50 kv.
