#107670 - Exchange?
Responding to: Steve M. Taylor's previous message
Steve M. Taylor said:
... even in the old days, because the tone was derived locally from a MOTOR driven oscillator !!

If you were on the same EXCHANGE, it DID work though, since the tones were generated from the same source

Was that even guaranteed?

In the UK, the ringing signal goes:
Ring,Ring.....Ring,Ring.....Ring,Ring.....Ring,Ring.....
ie, two rings, then a pause, then two rings, etc...
This was actually generated by a "two-phase" generator:
Phase 1: Ring,Ring.........Ring,Ring.........Ring,Ring.........
Phase 2: .........Ring,Ring.........Ring,Ring.........Ring,Ring
So, if the called and calling subscriber happened to be on different phases of the ringing generator even in the same exchange, you couldn't rely upon the ring-tone being the same as the actual ringing of the called phone!

To complicate matters further, some exchanes would give an extended first ring:
Riiiiiiiiiiiing.........Ring,Ring.........Ring,Ring.........

Did I mention that the whole idea of this project is fundamentally flawed...? ;-)
