That promotion is part of the language definition, so it happens everywhere - not just in libraries!

As I've noted before, Keil - being specifically targetted at small 8-bit embedded systems - provides an option to turn this off.
I don't know about Raisonance, IAR, SDCC, et al...

It's worse than I thought then. Another good reason not to use C on the 8051.
