It looks to me as though the "I-REG" is programmed from the "R-EXT" and each output has a switch to that current sink. That resistor must have some function. What might that be? There's current flowing through the current regulator into that external resistor and, of course, it can only come from the positive rail, right? It might, of course, be through other circuitry. What can you think of that might make this thing resistant to changes in voltage? an internal voltage reference, perhaps?

What do you suppose happens if the supply voltage (Vdd) changes? How do you suppose that current in R-EXT will behave as the Vdd changes? Why? Is variation on Vled going to affect the LED brightness? If so, how much? Why?

Now ... given this information, how does it apply to Chico's problem? Can he capitalize on that information? Can he make use of the shift register? Will that work with his 805x?
