I have verified with a fast digital camera that it is not a persistence-of-vision issue (which would imply a design fault); the digital camera actually can see the artifact. So this is just a regular, uninteresting synchronization bug and the above post is a bit redundant :)

Thanks for the tips on matrix displays, though.
