#186611 - I got the two confused
Responding to: Per Westermark's previous message
This was my mistake. The whole point of the gear train is just to distribute the power differently to the back wheel by changing the angular velocity and torque applied to the back wheel. This was made abundantly clear by

I expect the rider to change gear, so the rider stays at the same output power. Same torque and angular velocity of the cranks. But different angular velocity of the back wheel.

Per Westermark said:
It is, after all, the main goal with having lots of gear on the bike that you want to keep the crank RPM at a quite narrow window to maintain the efficiency of the rider. Different riders have quite different optimum RPM window, but it is normally quite narrow. So road and MTB bikes have lots and lots of gear options.

Talking in person would have cleared this up much faster along with a whiteboard.

EDIT:
To be more correct, I should also say that the whole point of a gear train is to also transmit power.
