#187268 - Just carbide is a bit lazy slang for tungsten carbide Responding to: Joseph Hebert's previous message |
Joseph Hebert said:
But it's not tungsten carbide either. They're 100% carbide, and they have ZERO tolerance for lateral strain. There can't be 100% carbide - the word "carbide" just means a compound of carbon and something else. So tungsten carbide. titanium carbide. calcium carbide. silicon carbide. But almost always when the single word "carbide" is used, it's tungsten carbide that is meant. And yes - they are very, very fragile. I have never managed to wear out any tungsten carbide drill - it's just a question of how many holes I can drill before I break the tip. Holding a drill against the nail and turning the drill with zero pressure, the drill will directly dig in. And it will dig in strong enough that the drill tip can't handle the torque. |
