Craig Steiner's Resume - Project Details 20204 - USA Signal E-Assist Project

Craig E. Steiner
USA Signal Project
"Medicine dose reminder and data logger"
Back to full resume | PDF version of this page

Overview

Developed the firmware that drives a medical dose reminder and data logger (E-Assist) used to remind patients when to take a dose of their metered medication and to record when the medication is actually taken so that the doctor can verify it is being taken in the right amount and time. This device could be applied to any medication that uses metered doses, such as eye drops, inhaled medication, etc.

Approach

  • Wake up E-Assist device automatically when medication cap is removed prior to a dose being taken.
  • Detect the tilt/position of the medication so that doses are only recorded if the dispenser was at the right angle to be able to dispense a dose.
  • Communicate with Dallas DS1337 real-time clock via I2C to set alarm time for next medicine dose. Wake up E-Assist in response to a scheduled medication dose.
  • Alert patient when it is time to take a dose of medication by sounding an audible alarm.
  • Record to serial EEPROM the date/time whenever medication is taken.
  • Develop firmware for downloader cradle which is installed in doctors' offices so that the patient may bring in his or her e-assist medication and download the information regarding when the medication was taken.
  • Implement power conservation techniques to extend the length of time the device can operate without changing batteries.

Technology

  • Microcontroller used was Philips 87LPC764.
  • Microcontroller firmware developed in assembly language using Pinnacle 52 IDE.

Craig Steiner's Role

  • Sole designer and developer of the microcontroller firmware.
  • Sole designer and developer of the protocol used to communicate between the E-Assist firmware and the downloader for downloading data to doctor's PC.
